Dental Implants – Hong Kong Qi Ren Dental Clinic"Dental implantsAlso known as "dental implants," dental implants use materials acceptable to the human body, such as titanium alloys, to be implanted into the alveolar bone to replace the tooth root for support. Then, prostheses, bridges, or dentures are inserted to fill the missing or extracted teeth. Dental implants help prevent the negative impacts on occlusion, speech, chewing, and dental health caused by missing teeth.

Dental implants require surgical treatment. Currently, in addition to traditional implant methods, patients can also undergo minimally invasive implant procedures. So what exactly is minimally invasive dental implantation? And how does it differ from traditional implantation?

What is minimally invasive dental implantation?

Minimally invasive dental implant surgery, also known as "flapless operation," is a relatively new type of dental implantation. When the patient has sufficient bone, teeth, and soft tissue, 3D scanning technology can be used to directly implant materials such as dentures into the alveolar bone through the soft tissue via a surgical guide.

What is the process of minimally invasive dental implantation?

Before performing minimally invasive dental surgery, the dentist will use 3D scanning technology to examine the patient's periodontal and oral health, assessing their suitability for the procedure. Patients with receding gums or alveolar bone loss are not suitable candidates. Subsequently, the dentist will design a personalized surgical guide to ensure precise implant placement. During the procedure, the dentist will drill a small hole in the affected area to remove any infected material and insert the implant into the alveolar bone. Once the implant and alveolar bone have successfully integrated, a temporary prosthesis will be fitted. After the permanent prosthesis is completed, a custom-made crown will be fitted.

How does it differ from traditional dental implant surgery?

Unlike traditional dental implant surgery, minimally invasive dental implants do not require opening the gums or making incisions and stitches. Therefore, there is less bleeding during the surgery, the wound heals more easily, and there is less swelling and pain after the operation. Minimally invasive dental implants require less surgery time than traditional dental implants. The implant placement process for minimally invasive dental implants can generally be completed in about 10 to 20 minutes, while traditional dental implants can take half an hour to more than an hour to complete.

If the patient requires both dental implantation and bone grafting, then minimally invasive surgery is not suitable at this time.

How should one care for their teeth after minimally invasive dental implantation?

All dental implant surgeries require proper care to ensure long-term use, generally lasting 15 years or more.

After receiving dental implant treatment, patients should have regular follow-up appointments and teeth cleanings as instructed by their dentist to ensure there is no inflammation or other abnormalities at the implant site. Daily care can be done using a toothbrush and dental floss, just like with natural teeth, cleaning the mouth at least twice a day, morning and evening. Try to avoid chewing hard foods, such as bones.
