Misaligned or crowded teeth

When teeth are crowded together due to insufficient space, it can easily lead to cleaning difficulties and may cause cavities, periodontal disease, or bad breath in the long run, requiring the use of braces or other methods to correct the teeth.

Malocclusion problems (such as deep bite, open bite, or cross bite)

Incorrect contact between the upper and lower teeth, such as inverted teeth, can affect speech, chewing, and even cause jaw fatigue or temporomandibular joint pain.

Facial asymmetry can affect appearance.

Malocclusion or dental arch development problems can lead to a deviated chin and an unbalanced facial shape. Braces can help improve facial proportions and boost self-confidence.

Types of braces

The impact of different types of braces on the price and effectiveness of braces

When a wisdom tooth grows crooked due to insufficient space, it becomes an impacted wisdom tooth. Its crown covers the gum, easily trapping food debris and bacteria, making it difficult for the patient to clean. This can result in cavities in the wisdom tooth and adjacent teeth, leading to periodontal inflammation (pericoronitis), causing swollen and painful gums, bad breath, swollen lymph nodes, and even difficulty opening the mouth or painful swallowing. Not removing wisdom teeth carries the following risks:

Invisible braces

Invisible braces use 3D computer technology to simulate the entire tooth movement process using computer programs and professional diagnosis by orthodontists. They are then regularly replaced with custom-made braces according to the speed of tooth movement, gradually moving the teeth to the desired position.

Traditional metal braces

Traditional braces are suitable for most people to straighten their teeth. Dentists make more accurate adjustments to the braces by placing the "prongs", changing the wires with different properties, and making detailed adjustments to the wires. They are also suitable for more complex cases.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces work on a similar principle to traditional metal braces, the only difference being that ceramic braces are made of transparent ceramic material, which makes them more visually appealing and therefore harder to detect.

Inner hoop

Traditional braces, placed on the inside of the teeth, offer the best aesthetic result, making them virtually undetectable. However, because they are positioned inside the teeth, the metal brackets face the tongue, which can affect speech and eating, and may even cause tongue injury. Cleaning is also more difficult for braces patients. Furthermore, due to the technical complexity, this method requires more time and is more expensive.

Self-locking braces

These braces do not require springs or hooks to keep teeth in the correct position, so regular adjustments are not necessary.

Orthodontic process

From preparation before braces to removal of braces

The process of wearing braces, from the initial fitting of braces to the fitting of fixed braces, can take anywhere from one year to several years, depending on the condition of the teeth.

1. Initial braces consultation and 3D examination

The dentist will conduct a comprehensive oral assessment, including tooth alignment, occlusion, and jawbone condition, and perform a 3D computed tomography scan to analyze tooth and bone structure or detect problems such as cavities.

2. Imprinting and Data Collection

Taking oral impressions, X-rays, and photographs of the face or teeth is necessary to create dental models for analyzing tooth alignment and occlusion, thereby designing a personalized orthodontic plan.

3. Tooth extraction (if necessary)

If there is insufficient space between the existing teeth of a patient who is getting braces, the orthodontist may recommend that you have one or more teeth extracted in order to provide adequate space for the teeth to be repositioned.

4. Wearing an orthotic device

Wear appropriate orthodontic appliances according to the plan: such as metal braces, ceramic braces, clear aligners, or internal braces. Generally, they need to be worn for 12-24 months.

5. Regular adjustments and follow-ups

Regular follow-up appointments with your orthodontist are necessary to adjust your braces. Your orthodontist will gradually adjust the recommended braces to move your teeth into the correct position.

6. Wear the restraints

After orthodontic treatment is completed, the braces are removed, and fixation braces are made to prevent teeth from shifting. Fixation braces may be clear aligners or small devices fixed to the inside of the teeth. Initially, they may need to be worn daily, which can be gradually reduced, and the duration can range from 6 months to several years, depending on the individual case.

Do backward-pointing teeth always need to be corrected with braces?

Besides affecting the appearance of braces patients, in the long run, inverted teeth can prevent them from using their front teeth to bite food and cause their back teeth to wear down and even crack due to over-reliance on them for chewing.

Reversed teeth can be broadly classified into three categories. The first is "maxillary bone reversed teeth," where the lower jawbone of braces-wearing patients is relatively long and protrudes forward, making the chin appear more prominent than the upper jaw from the side, creating what is commonly known as a "shoe pull face." The second is "dental reversed teeth," where the lower jawbone of braces-wearing patients is normal, but the lower teeth protrude more than the upper teeth when biting. The third is "pseudo-reversed teeth," where the lower jawbone and lower teeth of braces-wearing patients have no problems when biting; instead, because some of their incisors were lost prematurely, their upper and lower incisors may appear to be reversed when biting.

Orthodontic treatment can straighten teeth, repositioning damaged teeth to better positions, which helps improve appearance and boost self-confidence. Orthodontic treatment can improve the appearance and bite of teeth, and make cleaning easier, maintaining oral hygiene.

Will wearing braces cause pain or discomfort?

When first wearing braces, many people experience some discomfort or mild pain. This is a normal reaction as teeth begin to move and is part of the braces process. When the braces apply force to the teeth, the tissues around the tooth roots feel pressure, causing a sore sensation, which is usually most noticeable in the first few days and then gradually decreases.

In addition, metal or ceramic braces may rub against the oral mucosa, such as the inside of the lips or the tongue, causing redness or ulcers. In this case, dental wax can be used to reduce friction, or oral care methods can be used to improve the situation. After braces are adjusted, chewing hard foods may be difficult, so it is recommended to switch to softer foods such as porridge, steamed eggs, and pasta to reduce the burden.

However, most people gradually adapt to the feeling of something in their mouth and the soreness caused by braces within one to two weeks. If the pain persists, you can rinse with warm water or take a suitable painkiller to relieve the discomfort. It is worth mentioning that if you choose invisible braces, they are usually more comfortable than traditional braces due to their smooth material, and they also reduce the inconvenience of friction.

Best time for braces

Generally, the best time for braces is during adolescence, around 11 to 14 years old. During this period, most permanent teeth have erupted, while the jawbone is still developing, allowing teeth to move faster and resulting in more stable outcomes. However, this does not mean that adults cannot have braces—in fact, with the increasing popularity of invisible braces technology, more and more adults are starting orthodontic treatment and braces in their 30s, 40s, or even older.

Will braces affect my face shape?

Yes, braces can indeed affect facial shape, but not everyone will experience significant changes, and the effects vary from person to person.

Orthodontics primarily works by adjusting the alignment and occlusion of teeth, indirectly changing lip support and the direction of facial muscle exertion, thereby affecting facial contours. For example, when correcting protruding teeth, the teeth are pulled inward, causing the lip line to shrink accordingly, making the profile appear more three-dimensional; while for cases of underbite or an overly long lower jaw, correcting the angle of the lower incisors can also make the chin line smoother.

However, braces do not change the structure of the cheekbones or jawbone, so they cannot reshape the face like cosmetic surgery. Most changes in face shape are visual improvements, such as lips no longer protruding, a more symmetrical smile, and softer cheek lines. In addition, some people may experience a temporary "slimmer face" effect due to changes in chewing patterns during braces, but this is a functional adjustment, not a permanent change.3

If you are particularly concerned about changes in your facial shape, it is recommended to discuss your expected results with your dentist before the treatment. You can even preview the changes in your facial shape after braces through 3D simulation.
